SDAC is excited to bring you a collection of works by 8 local womxn artists. We wanted to create something that was representative of the time we are in from an abstract perspective. The Layers Within is a collection of works that all have a through-line of multidimensionality. Some layers in the works are easily identifiable upon initial review, but others take time to reveal their intricacies leaving the viewer the opportunity to come back to see the show at different moments.
We are all created with a multitude of emotions, life experiences, and levels within us. This show aims to capture a small sum of the infinite within these artists and share it with you, the viewer. As you encounter these works, we hope that you will also see the beauty and depth within yourself and your work in this world.
We invite you to take a moment, stop scrolling through social media, and spend some time with these works of art. They are waiting for you to experience them while you create your own setting in which to view them. There will not be a gallery opening or a large in-person gathering, rather a more intimate experience where the audience can take their time, read about the works, and ask questions. We have created this show with many opportunities to hear the artists speak directly on their works and learn more about who they are, please review the exhibition schedule for more details. SDAC is excited to share with you a group exhibition, celebrating the art of six local women and their works inspired by motherhood. motHER/child will be shown online from June 22, 2020- August 14, 2020, at www.michaelinesander.com. As we move this show online in what was previously planned as an in-person experience, we want to find ways in which the audience can connect to the imagery digitally. We want you to feel the fabric of the soft sculptures by Sarah Dolan, see the details and layers in the collages by Shantell Lewis and be able to process the content of the works by all the artists in this show without being physically in front of the pieces in an alternative gallery setting where we normally would meet you.
motHER/child is a very important show that we have been putting together for over a year to bring to our audience. We want to share stories through artwork about the journey to and through motherhood. Everyone has their own experiences and struggles, some heartbreaking and some full of joy. All of these stories are important and should be heard. We are here creating a space for discussion and to share in the admiration of motherhood for all of those who are mothers, were mothers, or are still trying to become a mother.
Through experiencing these women’s artwork, we hope to open up the conversation about this experience in life - how it doesn’t all go according to plan and how it’s not all perfect social media approved photos. This is life, and this is the real documentation of that. Please share, please ask questions, and please listen to your bodies. Women are amazing and so strong, we created this show as a celebration of that.

SDAC is excited to bring you a group exhibition, celebrating the works of six Virginian women artists and their floral-inspired artwork. She Blooms in the Winter will be on extended display through June 11, 2020, at The Broad: 209 N. Foushee Street, Floor 3, Richmond, VA 23220. Hours are by appointment. We will be celebrating the opening of the show on the evening of January 31, 2020, and will have a second event on April 15, 2020, where guests can join SDAC and the artists of the show discussing the power of art and creativity in these uncertain times we find ourselves in during a live webinar.
She Blooms in the Winter is a collection of works that all have an underlying connection of flowers, new growth, and rebirth. With the changing of the seasons and the turn to a new year, this show ushers in the warmth and color that only florals can give us in the colder months. This exhibition is not only a nod towards the future of spring but also allows the viewer to encounter the possibility of new beginnings in the current moment.

SDAC is excited to bring you a group exhibition, celebrating the works of Virginia women artists and their various forms of landscape artwork. Her Footsteps will be on display through January 15, 2020 at The Broad: 209 N. Foushee Street, Floor 3, Richmond, VA 23220. Hours are by appointment. We will be celebrating the opening of the show on the evening of October 24, 2019 and will have a second event on December 2, 2019 where guests can come and hear the artists speak about their artwork and the changing landscape of art.
Her Footsteps is a collection of landscape works, varying in both their stylization and viewpoints. With this show we are given the opportunity to see the lands not only close by in our local Richmond, but also on far away trips to Nebraska, France, Spain and Norway. These artists show us the world through their media and technique, each sharing their journey with us. We invite you to walk through the space and enjoy the escape you will find within each work.

Visions of Her will be on display through October 9, 2019 at The Broad: 209 N. Foushee Street, Floor 3, Richmond, VA 23220. Hours are by appointment. We will be celebrating the opening of the show on the evening of July 25, 2019 and will have a second event on September 10, 2019 where guests can participate in a figure drawing workshop alongside two of the artists from the show, Austin ‘Auz’ Miles and Amanda Gough. Visions of Her is a collection of artwork from six artists who capture faces and figures of women in their own unique style. Some artists take us on a visual journey through black and white outlines and more traditional figure works. Others depict portions of the model in great detail while the balance is more abstract, leaving the original form of the subject open for interpretation. Photography captures the stories of single subjects in an exploration of their life and history, revealing how we are more alike than we are different. Digital illustrations offer a commentary on the female figure finding her way through contemporary culture. Blended together, these artists weave a tapestry of the female form that invite the observer to find a face, body or concept of a figure that relates to their life journey.

We will be celebrating the opening of the show on the evening of April 23, 2019 and will have a second event on June 26, 2019 where guests can create a personal piece of art to take home with them during one of our artist workshops. With this amazing collection of works we wanted to bring the concept of art as a method of healing and growth to the conversation. From using art as a way to recover from an injury, to incorporating it into one’s daily meditation routine, to charting and recording mental wellness through the creation of works - these artists show us the breadth of how art can lead to various ways of tackling life’s challenges and celebrating your successes along the way. Every artist has a story behind their works and with this show we get a closer look into these six women’s inspiration and journey through their art.

SDAC is excited to bring you a group exhibition, celebrating the works of local Virginia women artists that showcases art inspired by nature and the changing environment. motHER nature will be on display through April 10th, 2019 at The Broad: 209 N. Foushee Street, Floor 3, Richmond, VA 23220. Hours are by appointment with an opening reception on January 22nd, 2019. A second event will be held March 18th, 2019 to discuss the artists’ works and their inspiration.
motHER nature is a show which both celebrates the beauty of nature and is a cautionary tale of our ever-changing environment. Works in this exhibition are inspired by the delicacies and intricacies of nature, while others bring to light issues such as animal extinction and the evolution of animals for efficiency. It is easy to take for granted the presence of these animals, plants and beautiful seas in our world, but with the visual storytelling of these artists, we can take time to experience nature through her.

She’s Abstract

This show comments on the abstraction of women in society while connecting the works of various abstract artists. Abstract works, usually lacking distinct figurative subjects, provide viewers with ample opportunity to explore and define the art in their own minds. Historically, women were viewed with a similar lens, but this no longer works. Women may appear abstract, but can take the reins and explain themselves to the world as they demonstrate how they would like to been seen.

With this show we want you to experience the essence of summer: the feeling of a gentle breeze against your warm sun-kissed skin, the sound of the waves in the background and the smell of the salty air. As you move through the rooms in the space, each section encapsulates those feelings in their own unique way. Whether you find yourself at the ocean, a lake, or the James River, go ahead and dip your toe in, the water is fine.

A woman’s place. Where we were then and where we are today looks very different in many lights. This exhibition reflects upon pastimes but with a modern twist. While once considered a source of entertainment or hobby - these 5 female artists show us how a return to pastimes turned into their livelihood.
